Press Releases 2005

EncounterPRO® Electronic Health Record users recognized by winning the Nicholas E. Davies Awards of Excellence -- Ambulatory care category for the third consecutive year.

Atlanta -- October 17, 2005 -- Wayne Obstetrics and Gynecology, user of the EncounterPRO EHR developed by JMJ Technologies, has been awarded the 2005 Ambulatory Care Davies Award. Each year since the inception of the Ambulatory Care Davies Award (previously Primary Care Davies Award) in 2003, a physician practice using the EncounterPRO EHR has been honored. Previous award winners that use the EncounterPRO EHR include Cooper Pediatrics (2003) and Riverpoint Pediatrics (2004).

The Nicholas E. Davies EHR Recognition Program, sponsored by Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), encourages and recognizes excellence in the implementation of EHR systems.  The Davies Award program was originally created in 1995 and honors Dr. Nicholas Davies, an Atlanta-based practice physician committed to the ideal of improving patient care through better health information management. Dr. Davies was tragically killed in a plane crash with Senator John G. Tower (R-TX) in April 1991.  He was a member of the Institute of Medicine Patient Record Study Committee, which coined the term "computer-based patient record." Dr. Davies was chairperson-elect of the American College of Physicians.

Wayne Obstetrics and Gynecology is a solo-provider primary care practice located in the rural community of Jesup, GA.  Jeffery L. Harris, MD is board certified in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and Family Practice, and devotes over 90% of his practice to Obstetrics and Gy
necology.

When Dr. Harris implemented the EncounterPRO EHR in 2003, in conjunction with the opening of his practice, two of his primary objectives were to improve the accuracy and thoroughness of patient documentation and decrease the practice’s exposure to medical liability.

Prior to implementing the EncounterPRO EHR, Dr. Harris’ patient documentation was often accomplished at lunch, after work or on the weekend utilizing paper charts. Audits of the records showed that the documentation was barely adequate to justify coding levels and were sometimes difficult to read. After implementing EncounterPRO, all documentation is done in “real-time”, before the patient leaves the office. The need to document during lunch, after work hours or on the weekend has been eliminated.  A review of the practice’s CPT coding levels was compared during the years 2003 to 1st quarter of 2005 for New Office Visits ( CPT 99201-99204) and Established Office Visits (99211-99214).  An increase in coding from level 2 to level 3 visits of nearly 17% for established patients and an 8% increase in level 4 visits for new patients, more than met the practice’s goal of a 10% increase in coding level after the EncounterPRO implementation.

After the implementation of EncounterPRO, the practice instituted a process to electronically transmit copies of the OB Ante partum report and OB flow sheets to the hospital for all obstetrical patients.  This has greatly improved the quality and timeliness of information available to Dr. Harris at the hospital.    An objective example of the value of EncounterPRO regarding medical liability was exhibited in June 2004 when the Dr. Harris’ malpractice insurance company wanted to append his policy to include a rider precluding performance of vaginal births after cesarean deliveries (VBACs). Dr. Harris had two patients who already had successful VBACs in previous pregnancies, were pregnant again and wanted to delivery by VBAC . When the physician appealed to the insurance company to allow the VBACs for his two patients, all he sent the insurance company were records printed directly out of EncounterPRO. A representative from the insurance company called the practice and stated that this was the first time his company had not needed to call and request additional information, and that not only could he allow these two patients to deliver via VBAC , they removed the “no VBAC ” rider from Dr. Harris’ insurance policy.  No liability suits have occurred since the implementation of EncounterPRO.

“We are extremely proud that Wayne Obstetrics and Gynecology has joined our other customers Riverpoint Pediatrics and Cooper Pediatrics that have received this prestigious honor”, said James D. Copenhaver, Chief Executive Officer, JMJ Technologies.   “The Nicholas E. Davies Awards of Excellence are especially meaningful because they recognize real world improvements in patient care and practice efficiencies through the implementation technology.”

Riverpoint Pediatrics of Chicago IL Wins 2004 HIMSS Davies Award for Excellence Using JMJ’s EncounterPRO® EHR

Atlanta -- Feb. 14, 2005 -- Riverpoint Pediatrics, a solo-practitioner office using EncounterPRO®, an electronic health record (EHR) from JMJ Technologies, is winner of the 2004 Davies Award for Excellence in ambulatory care. The Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) bestowed this prestigious honor on Dr. Armand A. Gonzalzles for the 2000 implementation of an EHR into his high-volume pediatric practice in urban Chicago, IL. This is the second year in a row that an EncounterPRO® user has won the Davies Award. In 2003, the award went to Cooper Pediatrics in Duluth, GA, an EncounterPRO® user since 1995.

The main criterion of the HIMSS award is improvement in the delivery of patient care. Dr. Gonzalzles’ office is now almost entirely paperless. Chart pulls have been eliminated. Patient wait times have decreased over 40%. Patient safety is greatly increased due to EncounterPRO®'s automatic alert module which alerts the provider when errors have been made based on allergy or drug interactions. By integrating his EHR with a practice management system, Gonzalzles reports reducing insurance turnaround time from 30-60 days to an average of 15. In 1999, prior to EHR implementation of EncounterPRO® , the practice had a patient count of 2200. In 2003 the patient count was 4225, a greater than 100% increase. In addition to Dr. Gonzalzles, Riverpoint Pediatrics employs a part-time physicians assistant and four additional staff members.

In his application to HIMSS, Gonzalzles wrote: "I have been able to provide better and faster service to each family. Practicing medicine has certainly become easier and more fun."
